Professor Cukurova brings research smarts and publishing tips
From 4 to 19 July, Professor Mutlu Cukurova from University College London, Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Educational Technology (BJET) and a renowned expert in AI in education, visited the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) to deliver a series of lectures and workshops. As a leader in the field, Professor Cukurova provided valuable guidance and insights into the department’s research and publication endeavours.
During his two-week visit, Professor Cukurova engaged in activities including research project sharing, round-table discussions, and workshops on research proposal development. He also provided consultations to academic staff and students on fostering research collaboration and support. In addition, he offered advice to staff and postgraduate students on human-AI interaction, learning analytics, and academic publishing.
As part of his visit, Professor Cukurova conducted two well-attended workshops. The first, held on 8 July, offered an accessible overview of common AI applications in education, such as large language models, and explained how these models function behind the scenes.
The second workshop on 10 July, provided attendees with practical advice on the academic publishing process, with particular focus on editorial expectations for top-tier journals like BJET. Both sessions drew enthusiastic participation from EdUHK’s academic staff and postgraduate research students. Each finished with lively Q&A discussions.
Alongside public events, the professor held over 10 one-on-one consultation sessions with colleagues and students from MIT and beyond. In these personalised meetings, Professor Cukurova shared constructive feedback on research design, publication planning, and future research directions. Participants also explored opportunities for co-authoring papers and proposing special issues across various education-related fields.

Professor Song Yanjie from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology extended the department’s appreciation to Professor Cukurova for his inspiring contributions. “His visit has not only deepened academic exchange but also laid a strong foundation for future interdisciplinary collaborations in AI and technology-enhanced learning between the two institutions. We look forward to building a strong partnership in advancing educational research and innovation together,” she said.
